From 300 m to 60 km: when you need fibre instead of copper, and how to pick among 12 current models
Every AV integrator eventually hits the same wall: how far can HDMI actually go? The honest answer depends on the medium. A passive copper HDMI cable is reliable for roughly a dozen metres. Cat6 with TCP/IP extenders inherits the 100 m Ethernet limit. Beyond that, fibre is the only sensible answer.

1. When copper and Cat6 stop working
If any of these four applies to your project, rule out cable-based options early.
Runs longer than 100 m
100 m is the Cat6 Ethernet segment limit. Past that you either cascade repeaters or move to fibre - and cascading adds failure points.
Electrical rooms, risers or outdoor runs
Fibre carries light, not electricity, so electromagnetic interference and ground-loop problems between buildings simply do not apply.
Genuine uncompressed 4K@60
4K@60 demands far more pixel bandwidth than 1080p. ORIVISION 4K optical models are specified at 10 Gbps aggregate interface bandwidth.
Computers must stay locked in the server room
Keeping hosts in a controlled room and leaving only monitor and keyboard on the desk is standard practice in finance, government and utility control rooms. That requires USB-carrying KVM-over-fibre.
2. How HDMI over fibre actually works
In one line: HDMI electrical signals become light, travel down glass, and become HDMI again at the far end.
The transmitter drives an optical module with the HDMI TMDS signal, producing light pulses. The receiver converts them back to electrical HDMI. Nothing is compressed on the way, so there is no encode/packetise/decode stage and the image arrives intact. That is the real distinction from IP encoder solutions: those compress to H.264/H.265 and ship packets over a network, which enables recording, storage and wide distribution, but means image quality and latency must be judged against codec settings.
So the first decision is simple: choose uncompressed optical transceivers when you need bit-exact picture and immediate response; look at the encoder range when you need recording, distribution or platform delivery. ORIVISION builds both, in separate product lines.
3. Five questions that settle the model
Work through these five and the shortlist usually collapses to one or two part numbers.
1. Distance
ORIVISION fibre products fall into three tiers: 300 m over OM3 multimode, 10 km standard single-mode, and optional 20/40/60 km single-mode variants. A few models are flagged as customisable where longer reaches are needed.
2. Single-mode or multimode
Multimode with OM3 suits short campus runs and keeps optics cheaper. Single-mode over one LC core handles inter-building trunks and long distance. Stated reaches assume the matching fibre grade; always measure the installed cable.
3. Resolution
1920x1080@60Hz covers most video-wall and conferencing work. For 4K, check whether you need 4K@30Hz or 4K@60Hz - they use different hardware tiers, and 4K@60 models carry substantially more bandwidth.
4. KVM or not
If someone needs to drive a remote mouse and keyboard, pick a USB KVM model. Watch the receiver USB count: ZY-OKH901 offers four USB 2.0 ports for multiple peripherals.
5. Extra signals
Most models also carry RS232 (bidirectional on several), 3.5 mm audio and IR. Choose a transmitter with HDMI loop-out if you need a local monitor feed.

Rail transit and metro PIS
Platform and tunnel displays sit well beyond Cat6 distance from the equipment room, which is why fibre is the default here.
Campus and security surveillance
Cross-campus and road-crossing camera runs solve distance, interference and lightning exposure in one step.
Broadcast and production
Studio to transmission hall, or OB van to venue, where lossless picture and no perceptible delay are non-negotiable.
Medical operating rooms
Surgical video reaches the teaching theatre uncompressed, while equipment hosts can be moved out of the clean area.
Command and control centres
Operator desks connect back to a central machine room over fibre, balancing reach against information security.
